LEX INITIATIVE FOR RIGHTS ADVOCACY AND DEVELOPMENT (LIRAD) IN COMMEMORATION OF THE 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM 2020 ORGANIZES A DISCUSSION TO BE HELD ON TUESDAY, 8TH DECEMBER 2020 ON FACEBOOK/INSTAGRAM LIVE.

INTRODUCTION

16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an international campaign to challenge violence against women and girls. The campaign runs every year from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, Human Rights Day. It was initiated in 1991 by the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute, held by the Centre for Women’s Global Leadership (CWGL) at Rutgers University.

Since 1991, more than 6,000 organizations from approximately 187 countries have participated in the campaign. Theme for 2020 international Human Rights Day is recover better.

Every year, the campaign introduces a new theme, or continues an old theme. The theme focuses on one area of gender inequality and works to bring attention to these issues and make changes that will have an impact.

The theme for the year 2020 is “ORANGE THE WORLD: FUND, RESPOND, PREVENT, COLLECT!

In 2020, COVID-19 touched our lives in nearly every way, everywhere, as countries went into lockdown and restricted movement to contain the spread of the virus. As doors closed and isolation began, reports of all forms of violence against women and girls, particularly domestic violence, began to rise.

The pandemic of violence against women is not new. Even before COVID-19 hit us, globally, 243 million women and girls were abused by their intimate partners in the past year. The COVID-19 pandemic intensified the violence, even as support services faltered and accessing help became harder.
