At Lex Initiative for Rights Advocacy and Development (LIRAD), we believe in the transformative power of art as a tool for healing, empowerment, and advocacy. Through our Art for Advocacy program, we provide a creative platform for marginalised women—including LBQ women, women living with HIV, female sex workers, women who use drugs, and women living with disabilities—to express their stories, struggles, and hopes through poetry and other art forms.

Having successfully hosted two editions of arts and poetry-themed events, LIRAD has seen firsthand how art can foster a sense of community, encourage healing, and amplify the voices of women who are often silenced or overlooked. These events not only allow marginalised women to share their experiences, but also create opportunities for the broader public to engage with their narratives, sparking important conversations about rights, identity, and justice.

Our Art for Advocacy events aim to:

  • Provide a safe and inclusive space for marginalised women to express themselves through poetry and art, helping them to process trauma, celebrate resilience, and connect with others who share similar experiences.
  • Amplify the voices of marginalised women by using creative expression as a form of advocacy. Through poetry, these women are able to speak out about the injustices they face and advocate for their rights in a way that resonates with diverse audiences.
  • Foster community and solidarity by bringing together marginalised women, their allies, and advocates in a shared space of creativity and expression. These events encourage participants to build connections, reduce feelings of isolation, and cultivate a sense of belonging.
  • Challenge societal stigma and discrimination by using art as a medium to humanise the lived experiences of marginalised women. Art for Advocacy helps to break down stereotypes and promote empathy, understanding, and inclusion within the wider community.
  • Promote empowerment through creative outlets by allowing women to reclaim their narratives, express their emotions, and harness the power of storytelling as a means of empowerment.

At LIRAD, we recognize that advocacy takes many forms, and Art for Advocacy is one of the ways we use creativity to drive social change. By centering the voices and experiences of marginalised women, we contribute to a world where their stories are heard, their rights are respected, and their dignity is affirmed.
