Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and Reproductive Justice

At Lex Initiative for Rights Advocacy and Development (LIRAD), we believe that sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) are fundamental human rights. For marginalised women—LBQ women, women living with HIV, female sex workers, women who use drugs, and women living with disabilities—the ability to exercise control over their bodies, health, and reproductive choices is often compromised by discrimination, social stigma, and legal barriers. Our programs are grounded in the belief that all women deserve the right to dignity, bodily autonomy, and comprehensive healthcare.

Reproductive justice goes beyond access to healthcare services; it is about creating a world where all women, regardless of their identity, background, or social status, have the power to make decisions about their bodies and futures. This includes the right to decide if, when, and how to have children, access to safe and supportive maternal care, and the ability to raise children in safe environments, free from discrimination and violence.

Through our programs, LIRAD is committed to:

  • Providing legal education and advocacy to ensure that marginalised women understand their sexual and reproductive rights and can advocate for themselves. This includes rights related to contraception, safe abortion, HIV prevention and treatment, and gender-affirming care for LBQ women.
  • Expanding access to comprehensive SRHR services, including safe, non-judgmental, and inclusive healthcare for women who are often denied the care they need due to stigma or discrimination. We advocate for healthcare systems to recognize the unique needs of marginalised women and ensure they receive compassionate, appropriate care.
  • Advocating for policy reform that protects and expands SRHR, particularly for groups facing systemic oppression. We work to eliminate legal barriers that restrict women’s access to safe reproductive healthcare, and we push for inclusive policies that address the intersecting oppressions of gender, sexual orientation, HIV status, disability, and more.
  • Promoting reproductive justice by supporting women’s ability to make informed choices about their reproductive lives, free from coercion, violence, or judgement. We focus on ensuring that marginalised women have the economic, social, and legal support they need to raise their families in dignity and safety.
  • Raising awareness and challenging stigma surrounding marginalised women’s sexual and reproductive health. Through community engagement, education, and advocacy, we combat harmful narratives that fuel discrimination and exclusion, creating a more just and compassionate society.

LIRAD recognizes that SRHR and reproductive justice are key to achieving gender equality and social justice. We are committed to ensuring that marginalised women have the resources, rights, and respect they need to make decisions about their health and futures. In doing so, we contribute to a future where all women, regardless of their background, can exercise their reproductive rights and thrive with dignity.
