At Lex Initiative for Rights Advocacy and Development (LIRAD), we recognize that the struggle for human rights is intrinsically linked to the fight for environmental sustainability and climate justice. Marginalised women, including LBQ women, women living with HIV, female sex workers, women who use drugs, and women living with disabilities, are disproportionately affected by the consequences of environmental degradation and climate change. These groups often face systemic challenges that heighten their vulnerability to environmental hazards, from poor living conditions to exclusion from climate policy discussions.

LIRAD’s commitment to promoting equality, social justice, and universal human rights extends to addressing the climate crisis and its disproportionate impact on marginalised women. We believe that climate justice is gender justice, and without the inclusion of vulnerable women in the fight against environmental degradation, efforts toward sustainable development will remain incomplete.

Our programs are designed to:

• Empower marginalised women to advocate for their environmental rights by providing legal education, representation, and strategic litigation. Whether through advocating for access to clean water, protection from harmful industrial practices, or the right to a healthy environment, we are committed to ensuring these women can defend their rights against environmental injustice.
• Raise awareness and build capacity among marginalised women to engage in climate action and sustainable development efforts. We equip women with the knowledge and tools to not only cope with the effects of climate change but also to become leaders in their communities, pushing for climate policies that reflect their lived realities.
• Advocate for inclusive climate governance by ensuring that marginalised women’s voices are heard in national and international climate discussions. We push for equitable climate policies that protect the rights of all women, particularly those who are most vulnerable, and we call for gender-sensitive approaches to climate adaptation and mitigation efforts.
• Monitor and evaluate the impact of environmental and climate-related policies on marginalised women, ensuring that governments and institutions are held accountable for their commitment to environmental sustainability and climate justice in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
